About SYC . . .

School for Young Children Welcome to the website of the School for Young Children in Columbus, Ohio. Our program was founded in 1969 as a part-time preschool program.  Our philosophy has remained consistent through the years; that children be allowed to develop at their own pace in an atmosphere of free play enriched with a variety of creative materials and the support of teachers who respect them as individuals.

As a community outreach program of the First Unitarian Universalist Church, we are a welcoming school--we do not discriminate upon the basis of race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, economic status, or cultural background of parents or children.

Long-Time SYC Teacher Honored by Ohio Early Childhood Professionals

Posted on March 01, 2013 in category Director's Blog

Congratulations to long time SYC teacher, Ann Rigney for being honored as the 2013 Ohio Teacher of the Year by the Ohio Association for the Education of Young Children.  Ann is an early childhood professional in the best sense of the word professional. She takes her teaching seriously but always with nurture and support as a part of her curriculum.

Ann came to SYC as a parent with her two children and was hired as a teacher in 1973.  Recently she became the inspiration for her daughter Heather Shumaker to write a parenting book about what she learned from her mother’s decades of teaching in our program.

Ann helped nurture and support me when I was a new teacher in our school.  She was a patient, encouraging co-teacher to whom I’ve always looked to for wisdom and experience since that first year.  Since then she has helped train many new teachers as she works along side.  Her toolkit of teaching experience has been invaluable to keeping our program philosophy consistent and in helping teachers understand child development and the individual needs of each child in the class.

Her ability to encourage and guide young parents is her hallmark.  She mentors parents as an important aspect of the complete developmental picture for each child.  Ann creates strong bonds with children and their families—providing a great support system as they move through the preschool years.

Ann has also mentored many OSU, Columbus State student teachers and students from local high school programs. She is giving of her time and experience to these young teachers and students.  Ann has dedicated her professional life to the field of early childhood education and truly deserves the title of Ohio Teacher of the Year.

On Friday, April 26, 2013 the Ohio Association for the Education of Young Children, the Ohio Department of Education, Office of Early Learning and School Readiness and the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services will celebrate and honor Ann and the other 2013 Ohio AEYC award recipients selected to be recognized for their dedication to early care and education and for the impact their work has had on behalf of children, families and professionals from across Ohio.

SYC 2013-14 Enrollment News

Posted on February 21, 2013 in category SYC Announce

We are suspending the acceptance of new applications for enrollment of children into our 2013-14 school year program at this time.  We presently have many more applicants than we can place next year.  While we are gratified that so many people are interested in our program, unfortunately we cannot accept more applicants.

We will consider reopening enrollment for any classes with significantly shorter waitlists and announce any changes about this on this website.

SYC 2013-14 Registration Underway

Posted on January 07, 2013 in category SYC Announce

Materials are now available for enrolling children into SYC’s 2013-14 school year, which will begin September 9, 2013.

The processing date is February 15, 2013 at 3:00 p.m.  For the best chances of your child being placed in a class, it is important to make sure we have your application and registration fee by that time.  All applications received at or before that time will be considered as having arrived at the same time.  We assign a priority level, then a random lottery number to each applicant and place applicants into classes in that order.

Applications received after 3:15 on February 15 will not be processed until after all the applications received before that time have been processed.   These applicants are processed in the order they are received in our office.

Due to unexpected weather difficulties as well as illness which are both common at this time of year, we urge you to not wait until the last minute to turn in your child’s application.

You can download the registration materials here.

If you have any questions about the enrollment process, or if you’d like to schedule a classroom visit before submitting an application for your child, please call us at 614-267-0254.

Taking a break

Posted on December 14, 2012 in category SYC Announce

SYC is now closed for our Winter Break.  Classes resume on January 7, 2013 (except for our January Friday 2’s class which begins on January 4.)

In light of the tragic events in Newtown, Connecticut, we hope parents will find these two links helpful with answering, in developmentally appropriate ways, any questions your preschoolers (or other children) might have about events of this kind:
